Contouring to the Atlantic coast, dotted by Lake Como, Divine Park and Wreck Pond, scenic Spring Lake was throughout the Gilded Age an opulent resort town comparable to today’s Nantucket or the Hamptons. First incorporated in 1892, well-heeled industrialists, Hollywood royalty and high society socialites from New York to Philadelphia flocked to fish, swim and sunbathe on this this verdant stretch of the Jersey Shore which they affectionately dubbed the “Irish Riviera.” Stunning examples of contemporary architecture like the Martin Maloney Cottage and Ballingary Estate abound, having crept ivy-like along the streets as more and more made Spring Lake their summer destination. Other examples include St. Catharine Church, the heavenly stone church described by the Monmouth County Historical Commission as “the finest high-style example of Classical Revival architecture in Monmouth County.”
Having found its niche, Spring Lake changed little between the end of the nineteenth century and today. The town still sees an influx of seasonal vacationers which set themselves up alongside the locals on the beach each summer. Charming Victorian homes line the streets, eyeing the immense natural beauty which Spring Lake has been so richly blessed with. Whether taking a stroll along the boardwalk, feeding swans at Marucci Memorial Park or taking in a show at the Spring Lake Theater Company, there’s no shortage of things to do in town. Enjoy fine dining at any number of delicious restaurants around town. Tee off at the Spring Lake Gold Club or match up at Spring Lake Bath & Tennis Club; you’ll need the exercise if you plan on taking part in the annual Spring Lake Five Mile Run, a gorgeous albeit brisk tour of the most scenic parts of town. Neighboring Wall Township and Sea Girt, only minutes from Point Pleasant, Belmar and Avon-By-The-Sea, one needn’t venture out far for even more shopping, dining and entertainment options. Centrally located and right on the beach, come to Spring Lake and live on vacation.
